Podophyllum


Genus: Podophyllum

Common Names: American mandrake.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 45cm (18inches).

Flowering: From spring through summer.

Usage: Ideal for the edge of borders and beds.

Podophyllum are excellent for woodland or wildlife gardens.

Site: Podophyllum prefer full shade.

Podophyllum will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich, moist but free draining soil.


Propagation Methods: By seed in spring.

You must sow this seed immediately after collecting.

This will increase your propagtion success rate dramatically.

Older seed will not normally germinate.

Pour hot water over seeds and soak for 3 days before sowing.

After soaking seeds sow in compost as normal.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 3 months onwards.

Very slow germination, so be patient.

Germination can be very sparodic, so transplant your emerging seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle.

Make sure you do not disturb remaining seeds when transplanting.
