How to Propagate and Grow
Liriope


Liriope originate from China and Japan and are a genus of rhizamotous mound forming perennials with tightly tuffed, strap like or grass like leaves.

Flowers are small, rounded and borne densely on erect spikes.

Family: Convallariaceae/Liliaceae

Species: L. muscari

Common Names: Lilyturf, lily turf, big blue lily turf .

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 30cm (12inches).

Flowering: From summer through autumn.

Where to Plant

These gardening plants are a must if you want thick ground cover at the front of your borders and beds and should be one of your first choices.

They have pretty white or purple flowers and the cultivar 'Variegata' has green leaves with with strong yellowish stripes.

They can be invasive if not kept in check, so limit their growth by digging them out as required.

Where: You can use them for edging any borders and beds as they blend and mix well with with most plants.

These garden plants are excellent as general ground cover and will cover your ground quickly.

You can also grow them successfully in rock gardens.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any moist but free draining soil. If your soil is on the heavy side, full of clay, dig in plenty of horticultural grit to improve drainage.


Propagation info

By seed in spring.

Best germination temperature: 40 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 1 month onwards.

Can be very slow to germinate, so you may need to be patient!
