How to Propagate and Grow
Kniphofia


Kniphofia originate from southern and central Africa and are a genus of rhizomatous perennial garden plants grown for their striking flower spikes.

There are around seventy species of this popular gardening plant.

Leaves are toothed and linear, arching, light to mid green in colour.

Flowers are in shades of scarlet, green, yellow and cream, some are coloured two-tone.

The flowers are borne in racemes on long erect spikes.

Species: K. 'Percy's Pride'

Common Names: Red hot poker, blazing star.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 1m (36inches).

Flowering: From late summer through autumn.


Where to plant info

These are a very popular garden plant and look best grown in groups of five or more with other plants of a similar size at the back of borders and beds.

They also look great grown in groups, again five or more, on their own as a focal point.

Try them as a back drop to informal ponds for a striking display, they look fantastic.

Where: They prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any humus rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil.


Propagation info: By seed in spring.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 2 weeks onwards.

Can be slow to germinate, so be patient!
