Iris


Iris are native to a wide area of the northern hemisphere.

They are a large genus of bulbous or rhizomatous perennials.

Leaves are usually narrow, channelled, upright or sickled shaped.

Flowers are various in colour and usually have three inner and three outer petals, some with beards.

These gardening plants are so varied they can be used in most locations and conditions in your garden.

Species: I. germanica "On Edge"

Common Names: Iris, bulbous iris.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 15cm (6inches).

Flowering: From February or March through April or May.


Where to plant info

These gardening plants are so varied in height you can use them at the back, middle or front of borders and beds giving you a colourful display with their different colour variations.

Where: Ideal clumped in groups or as a swathe in the front of borders and beds.

Dwarf variaties are excellent for rock gardens.

They make nice displays in patio tubs and pots at the beginning of the year.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

Soil: Very free draining, alkaline soil.


Propagation Methods: By seed in spring or autumn.

These seeds have a hard outer coat. Scarify seeds before sowing.

After scaryfying seeds sow in compost as normal.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 6 - 10 weeks onwards.

Can be slow to germinate, so be patient.
