Hesperis


Genus: Hesperis

Family: Brassicaceae/Cruciferae

Species: H. matronalis


Common Names: Sweet rocket, dame's rocket, damask violet.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 90cm (36inches).

Flowering: Throughout summer.

Usage: Ideal for borders and beds.

Site: Hesperis prefer full sun, they thrive in it!

Soil: Any moist but free draining soil.


Propagation Methods: By seed in spring.

Do not cover seeds with compost

Cover seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite.

Keep in light during germination.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 2 months onwards.

Germination is slow, so be patient!

But here is the best way to propagate hesperis:-

Hesperis freely self seed. Transplant these self sown seedlings, when large enough to handle, to their final position.

Division spring or autumn.
