Fibrous Roots

Fibrous root systems are normally spreading, very branching and have mainly fine roots.

Fibrous roots do not have a definable taproot, but some roots may be partially enlarged. Root hairs branch of from the fine fibrous roots and enlarge the roots surface area several times over.

Fibrous root growth varies depending on the plant type.

Availability of water also has an influence on root growth. In areas of infrequent availability of water, roots will tend to grow near the surface.

This is why correct watering is essential, especially for plants in pots and containers.

Fibrous root systems are found in lilies and their relatives and grasses and their relatives.
