Division
(VEGETATIVE REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS)
"However, the effort is always worth while when you end up with more free plants"
Division is a realtive easy method of plant propagation. It is simply the cutting/breaking apart (dividing) of one plant into two, or better still three, four or more. Yet another propagation tool, in your ever mounting arsenal of propagation methods, for increasing your plant stock.
And all for free!
It is ideally suited for clump forming garden ( yard ) plants such as saxifraga, bamboo, hosta.
It is also ideal for bulbs, tubers and corms that form clumps such as allium, gloxinias, lilies.
It is well suited to herbaceous perennials such as agapanthus, begonia, chrysanthemum.
Plants that have been divided will grow away easily and quickly providing each part has healthy roots and at least one shoot or bud.
Division being a very simple method of plant propagating is an ideal place to start your propagating endeavours. You will soon find how easy it is, and how quickly you can increase your plants.
The likes of Aster are very easily pulled apart and an established plant will divide into several pieces.
But, it can sometimes be hard work with the likes of a well established clump forming bamboo.
Bamboo's can be very difficult to cut/break apart and the use of a saw or mattock may be necessary to cut through the densely packed root formation.
However, the effort is always worth while when you end up with more free plants!
Bulbets removed from bulbs, offsets of sempervivum and rooted suckers of plants can also be classed as division.
