How to Propagate and Grow
Dicentra

Dicentra originate from North America and Asia and are a genus of rhizomatous or tuberous perennials.

Leaves are greyish green and oval or bluish grey and fern like.

Heart shape pink, white or yellow flowers are borne in racemes, on arching stems.

They are especially good gardening plants for cooler climates.

Common Names: Bleeding heart, Dutchman's breeches.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 90cm (36inches).

Flowering: From spring through to autumn.


Where to plant info

Dicentra are frequently used in woodland gardens or under shrubs where they perform well.

Usage: Ideal for general borders and beds.

Try them in patio tubs and pots, they look great.

They are perfect in woodland gardens and under shrubs, where they add color and interest.

Dicentra are excellent as cut flowers, both cut flowers and foliage are long lasting in floral arrangements.

Site: Grow them in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich in organic compost soil which is free draining.


Propagation info

By seed in spring.

Best germination temperature: 70 deg F.

Use only fresh seed (sow immediately after collecting) otherwise they will not germinate.

Time from sowing to germination: 10 - 14 weeks onwards.

Very slow at germinating, so be patient.

How to sow seeds

By division from early spring through to autumn.

By root cuttings 7.5cm (3inches) long from spring through to autumn.
