Cuttings are an extremely easy and rewarding plant propagation method for increasing your plant stock for free.
Like seed sowing, taking cuttings is a pastime and not a chore. The pleasure obtained from seeing your cuttings, taken by your own fair hands, root and start to flourish is a pure unadulterated pleasure.
Cuttings are usually taken from a plants stem. Although, roots, buds and parts of leaves can also be used successfully.
Any part of a plant can be used as long as it contains cells which can reproduce themselves by division and can then form new tissue.
The new plant that grows from a cutting is almost always genetically identical to the parent plant that it was taken from, in other words, a clone.

There are different types of cuttings that can be taken from plants but not all types of cuttings are suitable for all types of plants.

Ok, let's have a look at the different types of cuttings:
Softwood Stem Cuttings are normally taken in early spring from new growth. These usually have a very high rooting success rate.
Grenwood Stem Cuttings are taken a little later than softwood stem cuttings, just as the stems are beginning to harden up. These types suit a wide range of trees and shrubs.
Semi-ripe Stem Cuttings are taken as growth begins to slow down and the stems become harder. Buds have usually developed.
Hardwood Stem Cuttings are taken from dormant, (growth has actively stopped), stems. Hardwood stem cuttings are one of the easiest cuttings to take and root successfully. They require little attention after initial planting.
Leaf-Bud Cuttings are ideal for shrubs such as camellias. Leaf-bud cuttings are taken from semi-ripe stems, this a very economical use of semi-ripe stems for cuttings.
Leaf Cuttings are taken mainly from some types of house plants which belong to the Begoniaceae, Crassulaceae and Gesneriaceae families.
There are different types of leaf cuttings, leaf-petiole cuttings, midrib vein cuttings, leaf square cuttings, leaf slashing cuttings. Root Cuttings are suitable for some trees and shrubs such as Aralia elata and Chaenomeles and herbaceous perennials such as Acanthus.
Root cuttings are a simple and quick way to increase some of your plant stock for free. But root cuttings are not suitable for many plants.
Other methods of using roots to increase your plant stock for free include, suckers and division.
