How to Propagate and Grow
Clematis


Clematis originate from many areas of the Northerm Hemisphere and are a large genus of perennial climbers with well over two hundred species.

Leaves and flowers of this much loved garden plant are varied in size, colour, shape and form.

Clematis will adorn any pergola, trellis or arch. Once in flower they are hard to beat when used as focal point planting.

Species: C. viticella

Common Names: Solitary clematis, old mans beard, traveller's joy.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 2 to 3m (6 to 10 foot).

Flowering: Throughout summer.


Where to plant info

Clematis are one of those must have gardeing plants for covering fences or other structures.

Where: Providing they have something to grow up they are ideal for borders and as general bedding plants. They create an attractive impact with their bright colours and fluffy seed heads.

Grow them under shrubs and small trees, they create a stunning effect as they twine upwards through the brances showing off their beautiful flowers.

They are a must for growing up pergolas and trellis.

Clematis will cover any unsightly structure.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

Theywill also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any rich in humus and free draining soil.


Propagation info

By seed in autumn.

Best germination temperature: 65 - 70 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 6 to 12 weeks.

How to sow seeds

By division in spring.
