Chelone


Chelone originate from North America and are a genus of perennials.

Leaves are ovate or toothed and lance shaped.

White or rose flowers produced in autumn are borne in tight racemes and are two lipped.

These gardening plants will tolerate extremely wet weather conditions providing the soil is very free draining.

Species: C. obliqua

Common Names: Turtle-head, rose turtle-head.

Classification: Perennial.

Height: 60cm to 90cm (24inches to 36inches).

Flowering: From mid summer through to autumn.


Where to plant info

Chelone are useful in borders and beds as they will still be in flower when most other plants have finished flowering.

Where: Ideal for summer and autumn flowering borders and beds.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

Chelone will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Moist, deep and very free draining soil. (They like to put their roots down a long way, so make sure your ground is deeply dug before planting).

By seed in spring.

Best germination temperature: 68 deg F.

Time from sowing to germination: 14 - 28 days.
