It is a very large genus of tuft forming or rhizomatous perennials. There are around one thousand five hundred different species within the genus. Leaves are grass like and are green, copper turning to red or variegated. Flowers are insignificant and form on pannicles. This garden plant is grown just for its foliage.

These are very popular gardening plants for use as focal points planted in the garden or in pots and tubs. Where: Ideal for borders and general beds. Can be quite eye catching as a focal point plant in a small or medium size garden ( yard ). Looks good grown with other grasses or bamboos. Carex can be used effectively in patio tubs and pots. Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it! They will also do well in partial shade. Soil: Best suited to a moist soil preferably heavy clay or boggy.
By seed in spring. Best germination temperature:40 deg F. Time from sowing to germination: 2 months onwards. Carex are very slow at germinating. So, be patient! By root cuttings in early spring.
