How to Propagate and Grow
Autumn Flowering Gladiolus


Gladiolus originate from Europe, The Middle East and Africa and are a genus of cormous spring, summer and autumn flowering bulbs with a large species of over one hundred and eighty.

Leaves are long, basal and erect.

Flowers are extremely showy and are borne on one side of an upright spike and are densley packed.

But individual flowers only last about two weeks, but saying that new flowers will keep appearing well in to the end of autumn.

It is necessary to stake the plants which are top heavy, the gentlest of breezes will snap a spike which is full of flowers.


Genus: Gladiolus

Family: Iridaceae

Species: G callianthus

Common Names: Sword Lily.

Classification: Corm.

Height: 90cm (36inches).

Flowering: Summer through to early autumn.

Usage: They are ideal for summer and autumn flowering borders or beds.

They are excellent cut flowers, they make a beautiful, long lasting indoor display.

Site: These garden plants are best grown in partial shade.

Shade them from winds to prevent the stems from being broken.

It helps if you stake the plants, but make sure the ties are not too tight.

Soil: Any rich and free draining soil.


Propagation Methods: By division in early spring.

By cormlets in late winter, early spring.
