Astrantia


Astrantia originate from Central and Southern Europe and West Asia and are a genus of clump forming perennials.

Leaves are decorative, palmate and deeply divided or cut.

Flowers are star shaped on tall wiry stems.

This gardening plant self seeds profusely and can be invasive if not kept in check. It is ideal if you want lots of plants for free in just a season or two.

Height: 60cm (24inches).

Flowering: Throughout summer.


Where to plant info

Astrantia are an excellent gardening plant for the edges of informal ponds or the exterme edges of bog gardens, or any areas where the soil is permanently moist.

Where: Ideal in borders and beds.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Any moist but free draining soil. (The soil must not be allowed to dry out).


Propagation info

By seed at end of summer.

Sow seeds immediately after collecting for high germination success. Seeds do not germinate well if not sown immediately.

How to sow seeds

These gardening plants self seed freely, so to make the most of them carefully lift the self seedlings in spring and pot them up into pots of potting compost and grow them on.

Plant them out in their final flowering position when they are large to handle. More plants free for life!

By division in spring.
