Aconitum


Aconitum originate from Europe and East Asia.

They are a large genus of mainly tuberous or fibrous rooted perennials with rounded and deeply cut leaves.

Flowers are majestic and helmet shaped or hooded on tall spires.

Caution is needed with this garden plant as all parts of this plant are poisonous if eaten, so you need to be careful where you position this plant in your garden.

Sensible precautions should be taken and children should be made aware of this garden plant!

Common Names: Moonkshood, wolf's bane, Aconite.

Where to plant info

This is one of many majestic gardening plants and is very useful in most locations. Patience may be needed after first planting, it can take two to three years before the first flowers appear.

Where: Ideal at the back of borders and beds.

You can grow these plants in wildlife gardens, they really do enhance these settings.

Irritation of the skin can be caused by contact with this plant, so use it sensibly.

Site: Grow them in full sun, they thrive in it!

They will also do well in partial shade.

Soil: Fertile but free draining soil. Dig in plenty of well rotted garden compost or manure and if your soill is heavy, full of clay, dig in plenty of horticultural grit to improve drainage.

How to sow seeds

By division in autumn.

Established plants should be divided every three years or so.
